PATTERNS & INQUIRY
Get ready to perform several experiments, each targeting a different mathematical pattern, and to build a model to explain the physical phenomena around you. During each experiment, you will start with an uninformed wild guess, then through inquiry and processing information as a group, you will make an accurate data informed prediction of what will happen next.
You will also learn about data collection, graphing skills (both by hand and using the computer program Desmos), and the fundamental mathematical patterns of the course: horizontal line, proportional, linear, quadratic, and inverse.

Unit 1 Learning Targets:
-
I can identify the independent and dependent variables in an experiment.
-
I can use Desmos to make a graph and determine the slope (a-value) and pattern for an experiment.
-
I can determine a graph's general equation and use it to write a science equation for any science experiment.
-
I can make a prediction from both a graph and a science equation and use the confidence rubric to rate my confidence in the prediction.
-
I can determine what the slope of the line represents in real life.
-
I can identify, compare, and contrast patterns.
Online Activities and Resources
Our class incorporates several online activities. To view these in HTML, visit the links below.
The Patterns Approach Physics resources were created through collaboration with industry members, higher education representatives, high school science teachers, and middle school science teachers. The resources include labs and activities that cover the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for high school earth, life, and physical science AND incorporate engineering practices. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Science and Technical Subjects have also been incorporated.
