FORCES UNIT: Engineering a Shoe

This unit is centered on the art and science of designing a shoe for a customer.  You will decide on a type of shoe that you want to design and utilize ideas of force, impulse, and friction to meet the needs of a particular client.

Force plates will be used to study the relationship between force, time, and impulse and will allow you to get the mathematical models needed to make data informed decisions about your shoe design.

Unit 2 Learning Targets:

  • I can determine the specific criteria my client wants in a shoe design.

  • I can work as a team to collect data in order to design a perfect shoe.

  • I can analyze data to find the patterns of impulse, momentum, and forces

  • I can predict how force interactions between objects will affect the objects.

  • I can determine how an object will behave during interactions in order to understand the propwerties of momentum.

  • I can use PowerPoint to present my shoes design for my client to the class.

Online Activities and Resources

Our class incorporates several online activities.  To view these in HTML, visit the links below.

The Patterns Approach Physics resources were created through collaboration with industry members, higher education representatives, high school science teachers, and middle school science teachers.  The resources include labs and activities that cover the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for high school earth, life, and physical science AND incorporate engineering practices.  The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Science and Technical Subjects have also been incorporated.
